Wetenschappelijk onderzoek binnen het NIFP (Englisch)
Scientific research enhances our knowledge about how the human mind works and how this affects our behavior.
The Netherlands Institute for Forensic Psychiatry and Psychology uses this knowledge for the forensic assessment of individuals entering the criminal justice system, to assess risk of recidivism, and to determine what type of care a person needs.
Scientific research enhances our knowledge about how the human mind works
and how this affects our behavior.
The Netherlands Institute for Forensic Psychiatry and Psychology
uses this knowledge for the forensic assessment of individuals entering the criminal justice system,
to assess risk of recidivism,
and to determine what type of care a person needs.
This takes place at various stages of the criminal justice system
for example pre-trial,
during incarceration,
and during guidance towards forensic care.
The NIFP also conducts scientific research.
Three lines of research can be distinguished.
The first line aims to apply new discoveries in neuroscience to forensic practice.
For example: neuropsychological research that examines
the relationship between impulsivity and various types of violence.
This kind of knowledge… helps to explain criminal behavior.
The second line encompasses the assessment of recidivism risk.
For example using the VERA-2R,
an instrument used to assess the risk of extremist violence.
The NIFP examines the predictive value of the VERA-2R.
The third line of research focuses on evaluating and improving the forensic frameworks
within which the NIFP operates.
For example, by critically reviewing new legislation concerning forensic care
in order to foster the translation of the behavioral domain into the legislative domain.
The NIFP collaborates with universities, colleges and research institutes
on independent research projects.
The accumulated knowledge... is also used in NIFP training programs for forensic professionals.
This ensures their work is supported by the latest scientific insights.
The NIFP brings scientific knowledge…into practice.
This enhances forensic assessment and care
enabling us to contribute to a better criminal justice process.
